Basic Information About Neck Aesthetics

What is Neck Aesthetics? In Which Situations Is It Preferred?

Neck aesthetics is the common name of non-surgical aesthetic procedures and surgical methods applied to correct cosmetic problems that usually occur in the neck area during the aging process. It is generally preferred in the following cases:

  • Sagging skin: With the aging process, the skin in the neck area may lose its elasticity and begin to sag. In this case, neck aesthetics can be preferred to tighten sagging skin and achieve a younger appearance.
  • Fat accumulation: People with fat accumulation in the neck area can reduce this fat tissue with neck aesthetics. This procedure can balance facial contours by making the neckline more prominent.
  • Relaxation of the neck muscles: Over time, the neck muscles can also become loose, and the laxity in these muscles can cause an undesirable appearance in the neck area. Neck aesthetics can be preferred to achieve a more aesthetic neck appearance by tightening these muscles.

What are the Non-Surgical Treatment Methods in Neck Aesthetics?

Non-surgical treatment alternatives in neck aesthetics are limited. Vertical bands formed in the platysma muscle can be temporarily treated with Botox. Subcutaneous fats can be melted with lipolysis mesotherapy (kybella). Skin surface quality can be improved with laser application.

Apart from the ones I have mentioned here, there are many devices that claim to tighten the neck skin. Scarlet, thermage, focused ultrasound (hifu), BBL, endolift laser, plexr, dermapen and many more. For a while, methods such as spider web aesthetics, rope hangers, PDO ropes, french hanger were put forward for neck aesthetics, but these applications also lost their popularity in a short time because they could not provide a significant effect and permanent benefit.

How is Neck Aesthetic Surgery Performed?

Neck aesthetic surgery (also known as neck lift or neck lift) is a surgical operation usually performed under general anesthesia. Incisions around the ear and under the chin are used in the surgery. The neck skin, platysma muscle tissue, superficial and deep fat tissues, muscles of the floor of the mouth, and salivary glands under the chin are shaped using surgical techniques. The procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia.

Neck Aesthetic Surgery Techniques

There are hundreds of different surgical techniques described so far in Neck Aesthetics.

These surgical techniques can be classified into 4 different categories for easy understanding.

Closed neck surgeries: In this group, the neck is not surgically opened. Shaping is done with liposuction. It is often combined with surgical procedures such as chin tip prosthesis, chin tip advancement, fat injection into the jaw line, closed band treatment and non-surgical applications such as botox injection. It has limited use in selected patients.
Semi-closed neck surgeries: In this group, the neck is approached during facelift surgery. The side edge of the platysma muscle is found. The effect of facelift surgery on the neck is tried to be increased by pulling the muscle from here with sutures or by going under the muscle from here and moving towards the midline. No incision is made under the chin, the skin is not separated from the muscle. The most effective form is the lateral subplatysmal neck lift approach that we perform during deep plan facelift surgery.
Superficial neck lift surgeries: In this group, the neck skin is separated from the underlying platysma muscle through incisions under the chin and around the ears. The skin is stretched and sagging and wrinkles are removed. The subcutaneous fat tissue in the jowl area is visually shaped. Subsequently, the surface of the platysma muscle is shaped using techniques such as band separation (transection) and corset platysmaplasty.
Deep neck lift surgeries: In this group, the problems under the platysma muscle are also included in the treatment plan. Submandibular salivary glands, digastric muscles, sub-plactysma fat tissues are shaped.
Should the face and neck be performed together in facial rejuvenation surgeries?
Neck lift is often performed together with facelift. Many patients wonder whether it is better to perform the procedures together in this way or to choose a single procedure at a specific time. There are arguments for and against both options, but I prefer them together.

When performed alone, facelift surgery only affects the cheek area and the areas adjacent to the cheek. If you want the effect to extend to the eye area, for example, you need to add eyelid, temple and forehead surgeries to the plan. Similarly, if you want the effect to extend to the neck, you will need to include neck lift surgery in the plan.

Although we would like to think otherwise, the signs of aging are not limited to a single part of the body. The face and neck age together as a whole. If only one area is treated, this will make the untreated area look even older compared to the other side. This makes the results of a single treatment look more pronounced or even make the treatment look unfinished.

Another issue is that neck lift surgery is often performed through the same incision as facelift surgery. In other words, if the neck is not done during facelift surgery and if you want to have the neck done 5 years after the surgery, some of the incisions made in the previous surgery will probably need to be redone.

Performing a neck lift together with a facelift may prolong the healing process for a few days. However, if it is performed in two separate sessions, it will mean repeating the same process a second time and prolonging the recovery and separation from work in total. In this context, it may be a reasonable option to shorten the total recovery time by performing the face and neck in a single session. Performing the procedures in two different sessions is often more expensive than combined surgeries in terms of total cost.

After all, why go to the trouble twice when you can plan everything that needs to be done at the same time, including the recovery period? Long story short, combining procedures can give you more holistic, more natural and complete results by keeping your entire face and neck area younger and refreshed.
