Rhinoplasty in Men

Today, male patients constitute a significant majority of rhinoplasty candidates. There are some points that are of special importance for male patients in rhinoplasty. Let's have a look at these special items individually.

Male Aesthetics Is Different From Female Aesthetics

The perception of beauty and the criteria for attractiveness are different in male patients compared to female patients. The attractiveness of women depends on their beauty, and their beauty depends on the beauty of the sub-units that make up the face. On the male face, however, attractiveness is not synonymous with beauty. We can talk about the beauty of a pre-adolescent boy's face or nose, but for an adult male, having a "beautiful" face or nose creates a feminine/childlike/soft expression and makes the face unattractive. As with all elements of the male face, the nose should also have a masculine presentation. The key factor in male rhinoplasty is to avoid the feminization of the nose.

Feminine Elements Should Not Exist In Male Rhinoplasty

In male rhinoplasty, it is absolutely necessary to avoid feminine features such as a curved nasal ridge, a short nose, an upturned tip, a very thin nasal tip, a narrow nasal ridge, and a low junction of forehead and nose. Otherwise, the nose becomes “feminized”. In men, rhinoplasty should create a slightly arched, slightly voluminous, slightly elongated, masculine nose with sharp lines. Mild curvatures and nasal ridge irregularities are acceptable and favorable in male patients. Gender reassignment patients are an exception.

Body Perception In Men Is Resistant To Change

It takes longer for male patients to get used to the changes in their faces than female patients. Adaptation is usually completed in 2-3 weeks in women but not before 3 months in men. Thus, creating major visual changes on men's faces is an inaccurate strategy. Even if male patients adapt themselves, other men in their social life fail to adapt to significant changes. If you have a relative who says, "I couldn't get used to your new nose" although it’s been years since the operation, that relative is 80% likely to be male.

The Bone Structure And Nose Skin Are Thicker In Males.

Male nasal bones are not easily broken. Classical osteotomy techniques with hammer and chisel are both more difficult and more traumatic in male patients. We can easily list male rhinoplasty patients among those who benefit most from ultrasonic bone cutting technology. Thick nasal skin is a special case in terms of shaping the tip of the nose. In patients with thick skin, it is necessary to preserve the total volume of the nose as much as possible. Otherwise, the skin lacks volume support and looks empty, and the details of the nasal tip are lost. I recommend you take a look at the post I wrote on thick nasal skin. You should note that nasal tip edema may persist for 18-24 months in patients with thick nasal skin, and you should be patient after the operation.

I Prefer Open Rhinoplasty In Male Patients

The noses designed with the closed technique are generally similar to each other. They are usually somewhat feminine. Therefore, particularly in male patients operated by surgeons who always perform the closed technique in rhinoplasty, this femininity is often remarkable.

We See Nasal Deviations More Often In Male Patients

Deviated noses are a more specific group in terms of treatment. Their operation times are longer, and the price of the operation is usually higher. Generally, edema of the nasal floor and the nasal ridge lasts longer after surgery. I have a dedicated blog post on deviated noses. If you are a candidate for rhinoplasty for deviation, I recommend you take a look at that post.

In Young Men, We Need To Wait For Facial Bones To Develop Before Rhinoplasty

In male patients, facial bones continue to develop until the age of 24-25. Surgery performed before this age stops the development of the nose. As the patient grows, his nose may remain small compared to the rest of his face. We do not favor small noses in male patients. If the nose is already too large in size compared to an average male face, it is possible to perform surgery at an earlier age.
