Temporal Lift

Temporal lift, also known as temple lift, is a surgical technique in which the temporal region is diagonally lifted outwards and upwards. In the aging process, the outer half of the eyebrow droops more significantly than the inner half. The reasons are that the outer half of the eyebrow is less fixed by the mimic muscles compared to the inner half, this region loses significant volume due to the repetitive contractions of the large chewing muscle in the temple area, and the fullness of the outer half of the eyebrow in youth decreases towards middle age.

When you put our hand on your temples and pull them back, you can observe the improvement in the outer half of your eyebrows. This is the basic observation that led to the emergence of temporal lift surgery.

Temporal lift surgery is usually performed through a scalp incision in the temple area, an incision that does not catch the attention of others. The effect of the surgery is closely related to the tissue plane on which the surgical dissection is made. Techniques involving subcutaneous advancement create a more effective lift impact than surgeries that involve advancement in deeper tissue planes. However, the latter technique is both easier and safer and causes less bleeding. The temporal lift surgery has different forms. Some involves scars located closer to the hairline while others cause scars closer to the midline of the forehead. Likewise, the lift direction can be rather outwards in some forms of this surgery while it can be rather upwards in others.

The ideal candidates for temporal lift include individuals with significant loss of volume and softening in the outer half of the eyebrow and who have early forehead aging as well as a distance of less than 4 cm between the outer edge of their eyebrow and the temporal hairline.

The main advantage of this method is that it allows interventions in the part of the eyebrow that is most affected by the aging process, albeit with a small scar. The procedure requires limited surgery, hence the short recovery period. It can be performed easily under local anesthesia, favoring a brief work absence. Temporal lift is a very effective method to prevent possible temporal skin pileup, particularly after the High SMAS technique.

The main disadvantage of temporal lift surgery is that it is an approach contradicting the holistic perspective in facial aesthetics. Facial aging never takes place only in the temple area and the ideal treatment is to treat the forehead, temples and eyebrows holistically. Another disadvantage of temporal lift is that the lift direction does not follow the natural contour of the eyebrow. We normally want to position the eyebrows upwards and slightly laterally, while temporal lift surgery may cause a slanted appearance in the eyebrows as it positions the eyebrows more laterally than they should be. Another disadvantage of the method is that - in individuals who have a distance of more than 4 cm between the temporal hairline/sideburn line and the edge of the eyebrow - this distance grows longer under the lift effect, with the sideburn line receding artificially, thereby causing a masculine appearance.
